Unexplained Infertility Los Angeles.
Unexplained Infertility.
Unexplained infertility is the label given to about 1/3rd of all infertile couples. It applies when a couple has undergone testing of the sperm, ovaries tubes and uterus without any abnormal findings. This can be highly frustrating because on one hand, it is good news that there no obvious abnormalities have been found. On the other hand, not knowing why conception is not happening can be disheartening.
Up until the advent of IVF in the early 1980s, a diagnosis of unexplained infertility carried a poor prognosis. There was no surgery to be performed which could help, and medications combined with IUI were of relatively limited value. Once IVF was invented however, the prognosis improved dramatically.
It appears that while couples with unexplained infertility demonstrate poor fertilization in the fallopian tubes (where fertilization naturally occurs) there is no such problem with fertilization in the laboratory. In fact couples with unexplained infertility enjoy some of the highest success rates of all couples who need to undergo IVF.
