Couples who choose to undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment will have to take fertility medications as a supplement to their treatment. Like any medication, fertility drugs do come with side effects that can be unpleasant. To prepare patients, the doctors at The Center for Fertility and Gynecology in Los Angeles, CA explain all the potential IVF medication side effects. If you have questions about any side effects you are experiencing or have concerns about something that seems abnormal, our doctors and staff are always available to take your call.

Common IVF Medication Side Effects

It is important to note that IVF medications can affect everyone a little differently. You may experience entirely different side effects than a friend who also underwent IVF. This is normal and should not cause alarm.

Our doctors also want patients to understand that side effects are generally minor and are common among a majority of patients. Side effects of IVF medications may last for the duration of treatment, or they may be temporary. The two most common side effects of IVF medications are nausea and headaches. Other side effects may include:

How to Manage IVF Side Effects during Treatment

We will help you prepare for any potential side effects and offer solutions to safely manage your symptoms. Certain over-the-counter (OTC) medications and remedies can interact poorly with the IVF medications.

Some OTC medications carry additional risks for you and your baby if you do conceive. Speak with your doctor before taking any OTC medications. We will provide recommendations to keep both you and your potential baby safe.

Adverse Reactions

We also take time to warn patients about adverse reactions to IVF medications. These are rare, but often more serious, side effects. These may include immediate and dangerous reactions to medications, as well as long-term effects not discovered until long after IVF has been discontinued.

The most common adverse reactions are ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, or OHSS, and multiple pregnancies (conception of twins or more). With prompt treatment, OHSS poses little risk. Other adverse reactions may include:

If you think you are experiencing an adverse reaction, seek immediate medical treatment from your nearest emergency room. Inform the ER nurses and doctors of the IVF medications you are taking, and make them aware that your symptoms may be an adverse reaction to the drug.
