Surrogacy

Surrogacy can help parents overcome a variety of obstacles to achieve their dreams of parenthood. Explore how The Center for Fertility and Gynecology can help hopeful parents with surrogacy in Tarzana, Bakersfield, Los Angeles, CA, and nearby.

Why Choose Surrogacy?

Choosing surrogacy can be a deeply personal reproductive decision for individuals or couples who are unable to conceive or carry a pregnancy to term. It offers a unique opportunity for those facing infertility, medical conditions, or same-sex couples to fulfill their dream of parenthood.

Surrogacy provides a way to have a biological connection to the child, particularly in cases where one or both intended parents can contribute genetic material. Moreover, it allows for a controlled and legally supported process, often with the opportunity to establish a close relationship with the surrogate. Although the baby is born to the surrogate, he or she is immediately received by the intended parent or parents. For many, surrogacy represents hope and a pathway to building a family when other options may not be viable.

Surrogacy is frequently chosen by couples struggling with infertility as well as gay couples due to the benefits it offers, such as:

  • The opportunity to have a child genetically related to both parents
  • The opportunity for parents to be highly involved in the pregnancy and birth of the child
  • Very high success rates
  • A faster process than adoption

Gestational Surrogacy Step-by-Step

Screening

Surrogates undergo a preliminary screening by a surrogacy agency. This screening usually includes a detailed history, physical exam, and discussion of medical, social, emotional, financial, and legal aspects of surrogacy.

Surrogate Selection

The patient picks a specific surrogate. A large selection of surrogates is available through various agencies. A patient may also choose a surrogate who is known to them, such as a friend or a family member.

Additional Screening

A second round of extensive, detailed screening of the surrogate occurs. This ensures that the surrogate is healthy physically and mentally and that she understands the process.

Preparation

This step involves simultaneous ovarian stimulation of the patient and uterine preparation of the surrogate. The intended mother or egg donor stimulates the development of multiple eggs using injectable medication.

Egg Retrieval

Using a simple, ultrasound-guided, minimally invasive procedure, eggs are retrieved from the ovaries of the intended mother or egg donor. This is performed under conscious sedation (twilight sleep), transvaginally, with a needle. There are no incisions in this outpatient procedure.

Fertilization

The intended father provides a sperm sample or donor sperm can be used to fertilize the eggs in our Los Angeles laboratory. The fertilized eggs are allowed to incubate and develop.

Embryo Transfer

Embryo(s) are transferred into the surrogate. Any remaining embryos can be frozen through cryopreservation to use for later cycles.

Take a Look at the Surrogacy Process

Surrogates are carefully screened to determine if they are mentally and physically healthy enough for pregnancy and surrogacy. At The Center for Fertility and Gynecology's offices in Bakersfield and throughout Los Angeles, we can help intended parents choose their surrogate. If you are already working with a surrogacy agency, we can facilitate the IVF process with the intended parents and the gestational surrogate.
