What Is Recurrent Pregnancy Loss?

Miscarriages impact one in four women. However, when a woman experiences two or more consecutive miscarriages before 20 weeks, this is known as recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). It is also referred to as recurrent miscarriage. There are four categories of recurrent pregnancy loss.

Genetic

Immune/Hormonal/Clotting

The hormonal, immune, and thrombotic environment during gestation is critical to a successful pregnancy. While some factors associated with immunity or blood clots, such as antiphospholipid antibodies (antiphospholipid syndrome), are associated with recurrent miscarriages, other factors, like natural killer cells, have some connections. Our doctors are experts at choosing which tests to order and not order to best evaluate for this type of pregnancy loss. Once the cause is established, a variety of treatments are available.

Unexplained

Despite the vast array of tests available, about a third of all cases of recurrent miscarriages and other pregnancy losses remain unexplained. This does not prevent us from taking specific measures to improve the chance of a successful pregnancy. Depending on a patient’s history, basic medications such as aspirin and progesterone, plus frequent monitoring, have been shown to improve outcomes. In other cases, injections, infusions, or preimplantation genetic testing can be used to increase the chances of success.

Intralipid Therapy

Intralipid Therapy is a process of administering intralipids, or fatty acid derived from soy, to a hopeful mother to increase the chances of successful embryo implantation and reduce the risk of miscarriage. It works by reducing the body's toxic white blood cell activity and combatting the effects of some autoimmune disorders on this process. Dr. Michael Vermesh explains that he has had great success with this method, which is safer and more affordable than IVIG therapy.

Intravenous lipids therapy is a fatty acid derived from soy that can combat overactive white blood cell activity and prevent rejection of a potential embryo. This advanced treatment is a great option for patients experiencing recurrent pregnancy loss and implantation failure, as well as for patients with autoimmune disorders that may make a successful pregnancy difficult.
