Egg Donation Requirements By Michael Vermesh on June 15, 2019

Embryos to be used during IVFThe Center for Fertility and Gynecology want to help couples throughout Los Angeles, CA build their families. While artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization (IVF) can be used to achieve these goals, the use of donor sperm and eggs is also common. Donor sperm has helped countless couples with male infertility issues, and our patients have also relied onegg donation to help treat female infertility.

Dr. Michael Vermesh and Dr. Tannaz Toloubeydokhti would like to discuss requirements for egg donation. This will cover some basics for patients who would like to use donor eggs as part of their fertility treatment as well as women who would like to donate their eggs to couples who are struggling with infertility.

The Effectiveness of Donor Eggs

Egg donation is a great option to consider for couples that are dealing with female infertility. Issues such as diminished ovarian reserve, premature ovarian failure, and early menopause mean that a woman will not have viable eggs of her own to use during an IVF procedure. With egg donation, a healthy, suitable donor of viable eggs offers the means for pregnancy and live birth through IVF.

Qualifying for Egg Donation Treatment

Before discussing requirements for egg donors, let’s discuss when Los Angeles patients experiencing infertility should consider donor eggs for their IVF treatment. Each of these qualifications can be considered and discussed individually:

  • You are under the age 35 and have been unable to conceive naturally for a year
  • You are 35 or older and have been unable to conceive naturally for six months
  • You have issues with egg quality or quantity
  • You have experienced previous failed IVF cycles using your own eggs
  • You have a transmittable genetic condition that you do not want to pass to your child

Following a consultation, we can determine if donor eggs are right for you. We can then connect you with the right donor eggs for the IVF procedure.

Qualifying to Become an Egg Donor

Now let’s consider qualifications for women who want to donate their eggs to infertile couples. These can vary to a certain degree, but they are generally what a fertility center will consider:

  • You are an adult woman ideally between the ages of 21 and 29
  • You lead a healthy lifestyle and are in a normal weight range
  • You have a healthy reproductive system
  • You are a non-smoker
  • You do not use drugs

Additional Information About the Egg Donor

In addition to the above qualifications, there may be some important details about your personal life that will give couples an idea of who the donor eggs are from. This could include appearance, physical characteristics, education, career, hobbies and interests, and so forth. Prospective parents are understandably selective about finding a match that closely meets their needs.
