How Much Do IVF Shots Cost? By Michael Vermesh on July 22, 2021

IVF shotsIn vitro fertilization, or IVF, is a multi-stage assisted reproductive technology that addresses a wide range of infertility causes to give patients a greater chance of conceiving. IVF is a costly fertility treatment because there are so many steps involved in the procedure. Each phase of IVF has its own costs associated with it.

During the initial phase of IVF treatment at The Center for Fertility and Gynecology, patients undergo ovarian stimulation. This involves the administration of fertility injections to stimulate the ovaries. Individuals in the Los Angeles, CA, Tarzana, CA, and Bakersfield, CA, area often wonder how much IVF shots cost. Here, we go into the potential costs of ovarian stimulation.

Fertility Medication and Ovarian Stimulation

Ovarian stimulation is the first phase of IVF treatment. During this stage of treatment, patients are prescribed fertility medication, or hormones, to stimulate the ovaries and encourage the production of multiple mature eggs. Ovarian stimulation is vital to the success of IVF treatment, because it allows us to collect numerous eggs during egg retrieval, which provides more chances for viable embryos.

Ovarian stimulation is customized to the specific needs of each patient, so there are several different types of medication that may be prescribed. The amount of medication prescribed to each patient also varies. Patients typically do eight to 10 days of hormone injections, but it could be slightly longer.

Average Cost of Fertility Medication

The exact cost of IVF shots will depend on the types of medication that are prescribed, the number of prescribed medications, and the duration of ovarian stimulation. During an IVF consultation, our fertility doctors create a personalized treatment plan that includes more detailed information regarding fertility medication and the cost of IVF shots.

Even after IVF treatment has begun, the cost of IVF medication could change. Hormone levels are routinely monitored during ovarian stimulation and medication adjustments could be made, as needed. While it is not possible to say exactly how much IVF shots will cost each of our patients, on average they can expect to spend between $4,000 and $6,000 on fertility medication.

Will Insurance Cover the Cost of Fertility Medication?

In the state of California, insurance companies are required to provide some type of coverage for intended parents who take part in infertility treatment. However, the law does not specify that coverage has to extend to IVF treatment.

Whether or not an insurer specifically provides coverage for IVF, they may cover the cost of IVF shots. Fertility medication costs are separate from IVF treatment costs, so it really depends on the type of prescription coverage that is provided. The team at The Center for Fertility and Gynecology can help patients determine whether or not their insurance provider will assist with fertility medication costs, or whether the costs will be completely out-of-pocket.
